Amprolium hydrochloride
CAS code: 137-88-2
Indications:
Coccidiosis.
Pharmacology:
Amprolium competitively inhibits the uptake of thiamine by coccidia. Within cells, thiamine is converted to thiamine pyrophosphate, a coenzyme involved in the oxidative decarboxylation of α-keto acids during carbohydrate metabolism, specifically as a cofactor for the α-keto acid dehydrogenase complex. Since amprolium lacks the hydroxyethyl group of thiamine, it cannot be phosphorylated to the active coenzyme form, thereby blocking key metabolic reactions. This disruption of carbohydrate metabolism inhibits the development of coccidia.
